Street Sense and Sensibility

Street Sense and Sensibility

The photographer Garry Winogrand hated being called a Street Photographer and maintains that photography is finding a way to transform something from the real world into a distinctive image. He said, “Great photography is always on the edge of failure”.

Shooting on the streets (and at ground level) is a calling for capturing the everyday and seeking out the interaction photographers have with their subjects. There is a rejection that many photographers have where they don’t want to have the multi-faceted way, they tackle reality to get pinned down to some category.

The artists in this show include Matthew Chasney, Bruce Checefsky, Kenneth Cody, Christopher Mason, Lou Muenz, Mark Smith, Alejandro Vergara and Emanuel Wallace who all imbue ‘street’ as more of an attitude then a way of seeing the world as a set of conditions that define where or how an image can be taken. It’s about them peering into the chaos of the world and coming back with candid images that reinvent that world and show it in a new way. It is the decisive moment that the photographers in Street Sense and Sensibility capture.
